In 1982, the hospital became an accredited training centre for postgraduate resident doctors who were enrolled on the Fellowship programmes of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians.The first set of resident doctors for postgraduate psychiatric training in 1982 were Dr. Owoidoho Udofia and Dr. Abiodun. Professor Moruf Adenekan and Dr. Essien came on board in 1983. Dr. A.O. Akinhanmi, Dr. A.B. Adewunmi, Professor Oye Gureje, and Dr. M.L Mutagubya began their residency programme at the hospital in 1984.Nearly all the Psychiatrists in Nigeria as of 1994 had the whole or part of their training or some experience at Aro.Over the years, many Resident Doctors have undertaken their training at Aro. The complex provides both full-time and supernumerary residency training.
