Every 10th October is a day when the world marks the mental health day, a day which has been set aside to raise awareness on mental health issues around the world and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. The Association of Psychiatric Nurses of Nigeria, Aro Chapter, Ogun State in collaboration with the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro and Mental Health Awareness Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria, Ogun State Branch, organized a series of activities spanning a 3-day period to mark the year 2016 world mental health day.
The activities commenced on Monday, 10th October, 2016 with a Benefit walk at about 7:00am from OPIC, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta and terminated at the Panseke motor park with a brief talk on mental health issues from different mental health specialists. The walk was organized and coordinated by members of the Mental Health Awareness Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria, Ogun State Branch. The benefit walk was not without its usual fun fair of drumming, dancing and singing which helped draw the attention of members of the public to the significance of the day and event thereby raising their consciousness to the challenges of mental illness.
The commemoration was thereafter officially opened at about 10:00am with a lecture delivered by Dr. Oluseun Ogunnubi at the conference hall 1 in the premises of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The lecture titled “DIGNITY IN MENTAL HEALTH: PSYCHOLOGY AND MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID had 90 participants in attendance. Among those in attendance were the representatives of the Ag. Provost and Medical Director, Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Commandant of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps and Ogun State Director of the Fire Service, Ogun State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, students of tertiary institutions, psychiatric nursing students and youth corp members.
The program was concluded with the presentation of two posters on mental health risk and awareness to the hospital management by the Mental Health Awareness Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria, Ogun State branch. The posters were received by Dr. Gbolagade Amoo who represented the Ag. Provost and Medical Director at the event.
The day’s event was to be followed by a Public Health Advocacy and Free Medication for Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic Filariasis which had been scheduled to hold in two batches of A and B on Tuesday, 11th and Wednesday, 12th October, 2016.
